18 Tasks To Help You Move

Let's face it. Nobody likes moving. It's a long and tedious process and can be quite overwhelming when you've been in the same home for a while and accumulated a ton of stuff!

Proper planning can't take the stress out of moving and what better way than using a checklist. Here are 18 tasks to complete before your moving day!

1) Create a File

This can be digital or physical depending on what you prefer but likely easiest to use programs like google drive or dropbox. You'll want to keep everything from receipts on moving purchases to pictures of the home upon moving day for reference.

2) Create a Budget

Schedule estimates with moving companies, packing costs, Uhauls, etc... 

3) Request Time-Off

Make sure you don't wait too long to get those important days off. 

4) Garage Sale

Be prepared to plan and host a garage or yard sale. It can be a great way to get some cash for a bunch of items that you may otherwise just throw away.

5) Check Out Moving Hacks

There are plenty of articles online that provide some packing and moving hacks, some that can save you a substantial amount of money.

6) Inventory Sheet

Create an inventory for all your valuable items. This will certainly help alleviate second-guessing on moving day. You can even label your boxes with different colored tape to remind yourself which is where.

7) Mark Fragiles

The last thing you want is something that is near and dear to you being broken in the move!

8) Repairs

If you are selling your home, it is likely that you have a list of items that may need repairing before you give possession to the new owners. If you rent, make sure to repair anything that is not wear and tear, this could be the difference in you getting a large portion of your deposit back.

9) Moving Insurance

You can purchase moving insurance which will cover all of your belongings should anything happen during the move.

10) Important Documents

Make sure to gather all of the lifelong important documents that you may have stashed in a closet or shoebox. Any medical files, legal or financial docs, and even your passport and identification such as your birth certificate should be labeled and stored together and taken in the car with you.

11) Cable & Internet

Don't delay in setting up your cable and internet appointments. Sometimes these window blocks can be long and you want to make sure you're going to be available to be at the new property. 

12) Pets

Make sure your fur babies have all their ID tags and more importantly, their vet records and/or any medication.

13) Prep Meals

Buy or have ready a few pre-made meals or pantry items so you'll have something to eat until you can make that first big trip to the grocery store.

14) Back-Up Computer

If your computer gets damaged in the moving process, it can be devastating, especially if it doubles as your work computer. Be sure to back it up on an external hard drive.

15) Change of Address

You can put in a change of address at the local post office but you also need to update your address with all of your banks, payroll departments, social security benefits, insurance providers, Amazon shipping, etc...

16) Deep Clean

Whether it's you doing it or a professional paid service, it's also a good gesture to clean your home for the next occupant.

17) Essentials

Make sure to have a bag or box of your essential items that you may need to access in the next 24-48 hours of your move. 

18) Say Goodbye

It's good for closure to take a walk through the neighborhood and say one last goodbye to your closest relationships. Even if you will see them again, they will appreciate the time and so will you.
